Renter's Guide: Excavator Equipment
Learn About Excavators
An excavator is an engineering vehicle used for moving dirt, digging trenches, holes, cutting brush, demolition, grading and landscaping, lifting and placing pipes, mining, and dredging.
An excavator usually consists of an articulated arm or boom, a bucket and a cab mounted on a pivoting platform, atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels.
The design of an excavator evolved from the steam shovel.
Excavators may also be called diggers and 360-degree excavators (abbreviated as 360).
Tracked excavators are sometimes called trackhoes by analogy to the backhoe.
Excavators are also referred to as fronthoes. As compared to backhoes.
